Designed specifically to reach target locations within North America, the Tu-95 achieved high speeds and transoceanic range not through turbojets, but through an unorthodox turboprop propulsion system. Powered by four massive Kuznetsov NK-12 engines, each driving a pair of four-bladed contra-rotating propellers turning in opposite directions, the airframe generates over 14,000 shaft horsepower per engine, pushing the aircraft to maximum speeds exceeding 900 kilometers per hour (560 mph). Throughout the Cold War, Tu-95 flight paths regularly skirted NATO airspace, prompting frequent intercepts by Western fighter aircraft. Modernized variants like the Tu-95MS continue in active duty with the Russian Aerospace Forces, outfitted with digital avionics, satellite navigation, and hardpoints engineered to launch advanced air-launched cruise missiles such as the Kh-55 and stealthy Kh-101.
