Yusup Temirkhanov (1972–2018) was a Chechen man who became widely known for assassinating Yuri Budanov, a former Russian army colonel convicted of the kidnapping and murder of an 18-year-old Chechen girl, Elza Kungayeva, during the Second Chechen War. His act was seen by many as an act of retribution for war crimes that had gone unpunished, transforming him into a symbol of resistance and justice in Chechen society. In 2000, Budanov abducted Elza Kungayeva, subjected her to unspeakable torture, and took her life. Despite his confession, he received only a 10-year sentence and was released early in 2009, sparking outrage across Chechnya. The leniency of his punishment was seen as a grave injustice, a wound left unhealed. On June 10, 2011, Budanov was fatally shot in Moscow. Temirkhanov was arrested, convicted, and sentenced to 15 years in prison. Though he never admitted guilt, many believed he acted not just for Elza, but for all the voiceless victims of wartime atrocities. As he once said:

Temirkhanov’s death in prison in 2018 brought tens of thousands to his funeral in Chechnya. He was mourned as a "Qonakh"—a warrior of honor—and even Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, while denying his involvement, acknowledged that the trial had turned him into a folk hero.
