Top 15 Albums of 1997: # 1 Notorious B.I.G. "Life After Death" This album was released just a week after Biggie’s funeral. For hip hop to lose Biggie 6 months after Pac and in the same manor was surreal. The industry was in a weird space, but Puffy navigated this tragedy strategically and used this to catapult the label into a new stratosphere. “Life After Death” was a smashing success selling over 11 million records and went Diamond. Big's untimely death helped to sky rocket hip hop into another level and Puffy and Bad Boy elevated the genre to new heights (for better or worse)... When we lost Big, we lost one of the greatest M.Cs ever and on this album, he put those skills on full display! The biggest question people were wondering was can Life After Death match Ready to Die? Yes and No. As far as consistency of the overall production some say no, but one major improvement is that Big is even a better rapper than he was before. There is a big evolution from his style on the first album. He doesn't scream his lyrics anymore, he's more confident and relaxed. His wordplay is twice as strong and his storytelling ability has improved. There’s an amazing collection of songs across these two discs. He balances out hardcore with commercial, hustling songs, storytelling, and few other topics. He really knew how to make good songs and this double CD is full of them! By the end of the album, we get one of the one of the best lyrical performance’s of the 90s. Biggie killed every track and left no room for error.
