This one is personal. I made this film about postpartum depression because I lived parts of it. I loved my baby more than I knew it was possible to love another human being. I held him, kissed him, played with him, took pictures, watched him sleep and felt unbelievably lucky to be his mother. And at the same time, I was disappearing. What people didn’t see was the exhaustion. The anxiety. The overstimulation. The guilt. The loneliness. The feeling that I should be able to handle everything because I was his mother. And then came the comments. You should stop breastfeeding. He’s not sleeping through the night yet? You’re lucky you get to stay home. Enjoy every minute. They’re only little once. Most of them weren’t meant to hurt. But when you’re already drowning, even innocent words can sound like one more way you’re failing. Postpartum depression didn’t make me love my son any less. That’s something I desperately want people to understand. Sometimes the mother smiling at you is struggling more than you know. Sometimes she doesn’t need advice. She needs someone to bring dinner. Hold the baby. Fold the laundry. Sit beside her. Ask how she is — and actually wait for the answer. We talk about how it takes a village to raise a child. We forget that the mother needs that village too. Don’t assume she’s okay because the baby is. Mothers were never meant to do this alone. Created with Seedance 2.5 for the @Artlist challenge. #ArtlistSeedance25 #postpartumdepression #postpartummentalhealth #motherhood #maternalmentalhealth
