René Girard argued that we only ever want what other people want. We want to drive the cars that other people drive, and live in the houses other people live in. We even want to look how other people look as well. Girard called these 'mimetic desires,' and he argued that they motivate our darkest human tendencies. From the moment we are born, we copy each other. A baby copies its parents, a child copies its friendship group, and we all copy our peers. And so we learn to copy what other people want. But this soon runs into a problem, because while everyone might want the same thing, not everyone can have it. Not everyone can have the same car, the same house, or the same partner. We cannot all be equally rich, powerful, or important. And so our friends become competitors, and our neighbors become enemies. And so after this buildup of tension, we have to release it in some way. And Girard argues that we find a scapegoat. All of that rivalry, and all of that envy, gets channeled onto one victim, an outsider, the odd one out, the easy target. And as the group unites against that one person, the tension dissolves, and peace is again restored. The scapegoat mechanism is as old as human sacrifice, and as new as cancel culture. But the only way to resolve it is to recognise that our wants don't have to be copied from other people. Because while a scapegoat might resolve tension for just a moment, unless we resolve the underlying cause of our interpersonal tension, it'll never go away.
