Just some musings on the way we assign “goodness” or “badness” to our bodies in motherhood based on their performance according to some idealized, perfect-world standard. 😔 I can be grateful for my body and everything she has done for me... and also acknowledge that sometimes she’s a mess that doesn’t work quite right 😂 That doesn’t make me a failure— it makes me a fallible human like everyone else. When we tell people that their “bodies know what to do” or that their “bodies were made to do this” regarding fertility or birth or breastfeeding we skirt ableism— we ignore the reality that many bodies don’t function optimally in some areas or many. It can be a dangerous assumption to make, and even if not, it’s a damaging one. Whether your body “works the right way” has no bearing on whether you’re a good mom or whether your child will be bonded to you. Whether your body “works optimally” or the way you want it to is morally-neutral. It’s not good or bad— it just is. Signed, a 2x c-section/2x formula feeding mama whose body comes with baggage that impacted both ❤️
