My spiritual awakening showed me that over-identification with any label can be a dangerous trap. I discovered this, I sh*t you not, by realizing I was too attached to being a skateboarder. Despite urges to move on from skating, I felt a sense of obligation to continue playing the role of skater—perhaps especially since I had built a social media following & career based on my presentation of myself as a skater. (In short, my ego was very attached to “being” a skater, and it was hard to let go). By forcing myself to adhere to a label, instead of flowing with my life and with who I was becoming, I fell out of alignment with my truth, which made me anxious and depressed. Labels as fundamental (and mass societally-enforced) as “man” can be even more inhibiting because being a “man” comes with a dense set of rules and expectations that we may feel we must adhere to, which is problematic when they contradict our inner callings. Our Western society very badly wants us to define ourselves and adhere to a set of these labels, which, while somewhat helpful for interacting with the world/others, can be restrictive to the point of allowing DEEP-SET anxiety/depression to manifest if we are not careful. We come to think that we ARE these labels. This is where we get stuck, because in truth we are beings of infinite potential unbounded by definition. When I’m too caught up being a “man,” I feel as though I must hide my emotions. That I must look and dress a certain way. That I must move according to certain mannerisms. Perhaps most insidious is the feeling that I should not struggle emotionally, which deepens the suppression of the pain. In other words being a man involves a great deal of repression. Let us strive to be true to ourselves, as opposed to being true to the rigid definition of an arbitrary label. Let’s use our labels LIGHTLY. See them as temporary suggestions; NOT the final say on who we are. A great way to accomplish this is by living in the present, because in the present there is no room for calculating who you are supposed to be in order to get the approval of society. You simply are. RECOMMENDED READING: The Will to Change by Bell Hooks #spiritual #selfgrowth
