(Follow) us @historyhiveofficial During the Vietnam War, US troops tuning their radios at night often heard an English-speaking voice from the North. They called her "Hanoi Hannah." Her real name was Trinh Thị Ngọ, and she became one of the most famous broadcasters in North Vietnam's psychological warfare campaign. She didn't argue-she aimed to weaken morale. Her broadcasts mixed news, commentary, and music, sometimes citing real unit details or soldiers' hometowns to sound unsettlingly accurate. She'd read names of the killed or captured, play popular songs to stir homesickness, and tell Gls they were abandoned. Many veterans listened out of curiosity or boredom, often mocking the broadcasts. But they remembered the blend of truth and spin, especially when official US updates felt filtered. Her peak was mid-1960s to 1973. After the war, she remained a notable media figure in Vietnam, but internationally, she's forever "Hanoi Hannah."
