A moment of vulnerability ➡️ Having a platform doesn’t change the fact that I’m learning and in discovery like everyone else. My incredible community has exercised so much patience teaching me about our culture and peoplehood. While my dad is Ashkenazi, we didn’t have a relationship growing up. One of many sad side effects of this was that I didn’t have access to Jewish community until college. But once I did, I ran with it! I have been deeply in community with other Jewish people, online and off, since then. I want to have a bat mitzvah to deepen what I have already built. And to more fully understand our peoplehood, NOT to prove that I belong. Because that’s a given. Patrilineal Jews experience soooo much stigma in our community and it breaks my heart. How many powerful advocates, thinkers, and friends have been turned away because the “right parent” wasn’t Jewish? I understand that this is a controversial take, and I’m well aware of the history behind matrilineal descent, but what I have learned about Jewish values is that we cherish questioning, debate, and introspection. I will continue to challenge and query exclusions that don’t sit right with my spirit. May we continue to become the capacious, loving, and welcoming community we have always been destined to be.
