It’s because it was privatised and profit is being taken out of the system. Each region is a monopoly for a specific train company.

cause of the ROSCOs they lease the trains to train operating companies. they're cash cows with no competition. there is no motivation to do better.

Well LNER (the train company with the cracked trains) are government owned and run, because franchising on the east coast mainline didn’t work out.

I used to have to get southern rail to/from school, I finished school at 3, over the strike period I’d be lucky to be home by 7.30pm. What a joke.

My dad worked for BR for 30 years. It was always underfunded and so was failing. Hence argument for privatisation. Mistake!! Now owned by foreigners.

Compared to Europe prices are higher but there is a lot of cross subsidisation. Lots of trains, especially outside London run half empty
