I am the daughter of an immigrant. My mother came to the U.S. from Panama, eight months pregnant with me, holding my five-year-old brother’s hand, believing in a better life. Instead, she found struggle. My father left when my youngest brother was born prematurely, leaving her alone in a foreign country, working minimum wage to keep a roof over our heads. She never relied on assistance—only grit. Her absence hurt when I was little, but now I admire her beyond words. She taught me resilience, the very thing that would save me time and time again. 2011 changed everything. At 15, I became pregnant with my daughter. That same year, my little brother—who was autistic, nonverbal, and epileptic—passed away. Losing him shattered me. I had spent my whole life caring for him while my mom worked, and suddenly, he was gone. As if that wasn’t enough, my mother’s marriage to a man we thought was kind ended in darkness—drug relapse, abuse, and trauma I was too young to face. At the same time, I endured severe abuse from my daughter’s father. I finally escaped after my brother’s death, but I was drowning in grief. At 16, my mother left Utah to find herself, and I was left to figure out how to survive with my baby. I dropped out of high school, working full-time at Little Caesar’s while helping raise my nephew with my brother. Money was never enough. Depression took hold. I started questioning if the world would be better without me. Then, one Facebook post changed everything. A simple “LMS for a TBH” led me to the man who would save my life. My now-husband became my best friend and my daughter’s, too. When he met her, she tested him—stared him down, ignored his efforts, then, in her moment of victory, climbed onto his lap and promptly threw up all over him. I thought he’d run. Instead, he cleaned her up before himself and stayed. Over the next 18 months, he convinced me I deserved more. I earned my diploma—12.5 credits in 60 days—while pregnant with our second child. His mother encouraged me to compete for a cosmetology scholarship, which led me to a career I never saw coming. Hair became my escape, my passion, my art. I started small—home salon, booth rental—then grew. Education fascinated me. I soaked up everything I could. By 2021, I was creating content, landing my first brand deal at 6.5K Instagram followers and 31K on TikTok. I convinced my husband to leave his job to support my dream, and he did. Then, life threw another curveball. In November 2021, while working, I had a grand mal seizure. The very thing that took my brother’s life now had a grip on mine. I was diagnosed with epilepsy, and the medications changed me. I felt like a puppet in my own body, moving through life but not truly living it. Depression hit hard. But I refused to give in. Through the worst years of my life, I kept pushing. I grew my platform, won awards, and became an independent educator, traveling the country sharing my passion. In June 2023, my husband discovered the keto diet—originally designed for epilepsy patients. I gave it a shot. By October, I was off medication. I felt like myself for the first time in years. On January 11, 2024, my EEG confirmed it: seizure-free. That day, I made a promise to always choose myself, to pursue my dreams without hesitation. Today, I work with major brands, including OLAPLEX as a Pro Collective member. I’m hosting a nationwide education tour, creating opportunities for fellow artists to grow. None of this would have been possible without my mother’s resilience, my husband’s unwavering belief in me, and the support of my followers. You’ve changed my life in ways I could never have imagined, and every like, comment, and share continues to shape my journey. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. This is only the beginning. #lyndadidit #hairtok #hairstylistsoftiktok
