The Tenshō embassy was a diplomatic mission sent by the Japanese Christian Lord Ōtomo Sōrin to the Pope and the kings of Europe in 1582, during the Tenshō Era in Japan. The embassy was led by Mancio Itō, a Japanese nobleman, who was the first official Japanese emissary to Europe. The idea of sending a Japanese embassy to Europe was originally conceived by the Jesuit Alessandro Valignano and was sponsored by the three Kirishitan daimyōs (Christian feudal lords) Ōmura Sumitada, Ōtomo Sōrin, and Arima Harunobu. Mancio Itō left Nagasaki on February 20, 1582, in the company of three other noblemen: Miguel Chijiwa, Julião Nakaura, and Martinho Hara. The Jesuits hoped to establish a dialogue with local political authorities and extend their diplomatic efforts by sending an embassy to the Pope. The Tenshō embassy was received with great hospitality and generosity throughout their stay in Spain and Italy, and they even met Philip II of Spain and the Popes Gregory XIII and Sixtus V. Despite the grand plans for the Tenshō Embassy, it had very little long-term impact on Japan or Europe. The Tokugawa shogunate later closed Japan off from the outside world, and there wouldn't be another formal delegation sent by Japan to Europe for over 250 years. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tensh%C5%8D_embassy https://brill.com/downloadpdf/journals/dipl/3/1/article-p116_116.xml https://everything-everywhere.com/the-tensho-embassy/ https://www.academia.edu/7019835/Travelers_from_Afar_through_Civic_Spaces_The_Tensh%C5%8D_Embassy_in_Renaissance_Italy #Japan #Japanese #Tokyo #Kyoto #Nagasaki #history #historymeme #historymemes #memepage #memesonly #dankmeme #dankmemes #memes #meme #Christian #Jesus #Christianmemes #catholic #Protestant #pope #religion #church
