Imagine being a police officer, getting into your patrol car, chasing a man who is walking away from you, driving onto a sidewalk and through a grassy area, what seems like he’s trying to hit him, and eventually crashing your cruiser into a fence. That is exactly what Baltimore Police Officer Robert Parks was accused of doing, and the entire thing was caught on video. It happened in October 2025 after Parks approached a group of people outside a liquor store and told them to leave the area. One man, Antrell Smith, walked away. Parks called him over to the cruiser, but Smith refused. Parks then allegedly threatened to call the police dogs and went after him in his patrol car. Video showed Parks driving onto the sidewalk and into a grassy field before crashing into a fence. Prosecutors charged him with attempted second degree murder, first degree assault and misconduct in office. But after a two day bench trial, Judge Dana Middleton found Parks NOT GUILTY of attempted murder and first degree assault. However, he was found guilty of second degree assault, three counts of misconduct in office and reckless driving. The judge said she relied heavily on the video evidence. Parks had been suspended without pay, and now he is scheduled to be sentenced in January 2027. So the attempted murder charge is gone, but this officer was still convicted of multiple crimes stemming from the pursuit. And once again, a camera ended up being a pretty important witness.
