A colonized mind is not a mind at peace. It is a mind constantly pulled in two directions. One part of it knows there is something wrong with the system. It feels the disrespect, the exclusion, the pressure to change, the message that it must become less of itself to be accepted. But another part has been taught to seek validation from that same system. That is the psychological trap. You begin to question your own worth because you are measuring yourself by standards that were never created to honor you. You may feel forced to speak differently, look differently, act differently, or distance yourself from your own people just to be seen as acceptable. Frantz Fanon understood that oppression does not only attack a people from the outside. It can create division inside the mind. Real healing begins when we stop asking the people who taught us to doubt ourselves for permission to value who we are.
