this isn't to say that life was always great for a medieval woman but no one was forcing (most) women to get married to a rando as a teen!!

this myth goes hand in hand with the young death myth too. my parents are still convinced everyone in the middle ages died at like 40 🙄

What the average person knows about history is mostly about how nobles and aristocrats lived. Mostly because those were the people writing and 1/2

yes people don’t realize that audiences of shakespeare wouldn’t have thought romeo & juliet was normal for their age

Do you think future historians will look back and think the same things about us based on people like Woody Allen?

The Game of Throne fans always INSIST “that’s just how things were back them!” A) no it wasn’t, B) your show/book has dragons.

Sadly my great grandmother did get married at the age of 12. I'm very glad it wasn't a common thing but it did happen, even in recent history

What is a medieval canon law? Wasn't there like hundreds of states in Europe in that time? Which country's law was applied?

Is it true that aristocratic marriages involving young people were often “symbolic” until they came of age?

What was the average life expectancy then? Because if it was short, maybe they thought of their 20s like, say, we think of our 30s now.

People are insistent because they want to make their attraction to children seem "less bad" by referencing history.

Wasn’t Juliet supposed to get married at 14/15 in Romeo and Juliet and that seems pretty historically accurate because he was alive then

Students are told this by English teachers (not historians) when learning Romeo and Juliet. When the history lessons omit it the error gets hardwired.

And say if an aristocrat did get married very young (~13 yrs old), that doesn’t necessarily mean the marriage was consummated right away right?
