Prime Minister Marape walking out of Waigani courthouse (NBC News) Prime Minister James Marape has testified in court today about the controversial payments made to Paul Paraka Law firm in 2012. Mr Marape appeared in court this morning as a state witness in the highly publicized case involving former Deputy Secretary for the Department of Finance, Jacob Yafai. The case revolves around the alleged illegal payments of K41 million made to Paul Paraka Lawyers during Marape's tenure as Finance Minister in 2012. Accompanying Marape to the courtroom were Attorney General Pila Niningi and Defence Minister Dr Billy Joseph. Marape was first questioned by the state prosecution regarding his involvement in the alleged payments. During his testimony, Marape stated that he had explicitly instructed both the accused and the Secretary of Finance, Steven Gibson, to halt any payments to the Paraka Law Firm. Despite these instructions, Marape revealed that a total of four payments were processed, totaling K41 million, against his directives. Marape emphasized that he was aware of the payments and had taken steps to prevent them. He mentioned that Paul Paraka's bill was among other legal bills, but his were notably large and required further clearance. Marape recalled that then-Prime Minister Peter O'Neill had also told him not to authorize the payments. After the payments were made, both Yafai and Secretary Gibson were suspended from their positions, but they did not respond to the accusations against them. Furthermore, the court also noted a lack of verification from the Department of Justice and Attorney General [DJAG], which contributed to the confusion surrounding the payments. The Chief Justice concluded Marape's session and thanked him for his testimony, while Prime Minister Marap also extended his apologies for not being able to attend earlier scheduled appearances.
