Con crunch has become a badge of honor in the cosplay community, but it shouldn’t. Pulling all-nighters. Living off caffeine. Finishing armor in the hotel room. Hand sewing at 3 AM before badge pickup. We’ve all laughed about it because at some point most of us have been there. But here’s the truth: Con crunch isn’t a requirement to be a real cosplayer. In fact, it usually leads to more stress during the con than fun. Here’s what I’ve learned after years of conventions: -Start your cosplay as early as possible. Even working on it 20 to 30 minutes a few nights a week is less overwhelming than trying to do everything the week before. -Book flights, hotels and parking early if you’re traveling. Prices almost always increase the longer you wait. 8 hour drive might sound okay on paper but halfway through you might wish you booked a flight instead -Split hotel rooms and transportation with trusted friends. It can save hundreds of dollars while making the trip more enjoyable. -Order wigs, contacts and specialty materials months in advance. Shipping delays happen more often than we’d like. -Test your costume before the convention. Wear it around your house, make sure you can sit, walk, eat and use the restroom comfortably. You’ll catch problems before they become emergencies. -Pack a cosplay emergency kit. Safety pins, fashion tape, super glue, hot glue sticks, sewing supplies, stain remover, wig pins and pain relievers can save your entire day. -Drink water, eat real meals and get some sleep. A great cosplay isn’t worth feeling miserable all weekend. -Remember why you’re going. You’re there to meet with friends, celebrate characters you love, discover amazing artists, support vendors and create memories. Not spend the entire convention repairing your costume. Your cosplay doesn’t have to be perfect. Most people won’t notice the tiny flaws that you’ve been staring at for weeks. They’ll remember your excitement, your confidence and how much fun you looked like you were having. So if you’re currently in con crunch please don’t overwhelm yourself with last minute fixes. Take a pause, asses what you have and work with the time you have.
