Hurricane interviews: Our third interview related to the aftermath of Hurricane Helene was with a mother and daughter who had their home destroyed by Hurricane Helene. Meet Michelle and Vicky. Both were rescued by police and the national guard. Michelle, who works as a waiter at a local waffle house near Asheville, connected with us while we were grabbing a bite to eat. During our conversation, she mentioned that the Super 8 motel, where she and her mother had lived for years, was destroyed. The next day, Michelle and her mother agreed to do an interview with us at a new motel they’re living at. According to Vicky and Michelle, they haven’t received any monetary support and have been waiting over two weeks for their FEMA requests to be approved. Because they lived in a motel, they face additional challenges in verifying their residency. Both Vicky and Michelle also expressed frustration about being unable to reach their FEMA caseworker. During the interview, they tried calling the caseworker’s number, but it wouldn’t connect — something they said had been happening for days. On top of their rooms being destroyed, they were also looted. Vicky, who had only minutes to evacuate, had been saving money from her paychecks in an envelope in her room. She lost $160 when it was stolen, a significant amount for her. On top of that, Vicky is struggling to get her much-needed heart medication, which she hasn’t had access to in almost 10 days. Michelle, evacuated the motel with only the clothes on her back and her cat. Everything she had was destroyed. Both women told us they’re not into politics and don’t understand why this is becoming political. They just need and want help. After telling us that she was about to run out of money because her aid was still pending, we encouraged them to make a way people could directly support them. Michelle opted to create a gofundme, we’ve linked it in our bio and story for anyone who’d like to support them.
