Many times when we say “unconditional love” we mean loving someone through thick and thin. I can get behind having a commitment that isn’t dictated by outside factors like life events, unexpected financial changes, and sickness. ⠀ But many other times I hear this expression used as a way to overlook negative behaviors and problematic dynamics. ⠀ In this regard, love cannot be without conditions. ⠀ Conditions of what we can expect from love preserve the concept of love itself. Love cannot be associated with harmful behaviors, otherwise it becomes confusing, unsafe and at its worst dangerous all in the name of “ love”. ⠀ You extending love to others and accepting someone else’s love should have boundaries (conditions) dependent on their behavior and actions toward you. ⠀ Evaluating what love looks like to you and feels like might mean you take a deeper dive into how you experienced love growing up and in significant relationships. ⠀ Love that has healthy conditions and continues to be mutually good for the individuals in said relationship elevates the choice we make in committing to another and helps to prioritize our own well being as well as the relationship. ⠀ #therapy #counselor #couplescounselor #Love #relationships #atlantatherapy #communication #MentalHealth
