& that was supposed to be one of the “easier” 14ers 😮‍💨 (a d) White mountain is the third highest mountain in California and the 18th highest mountain in the lower 48!!! It is technically considered to be one of the easier 14ers because the grade is more manageable than some of the others, HOWEVER, I don’t like to describe any 14,000 ft mountain “easy” because anytime you hike at high elevation there are a lot more factors that you have to consider in order to stay safe than you do on any regular hike. This was actually our second attempt at White Mountain. On our first attempt, we had to bail after an un-forecasted hail and snowstorm rolled in. White mountain is notorious for their crazy winds and unpredictable afternoon weather, so this time we made sure to come fully prepared for whatever the mountain decided to throw at us! Our packing list - @Columbia1938 18L blackcomb ridge day pack -SOS device -snacks -2L water each -rain pant & jacket -insulating jacket -headlamp -beanie & gloves -sunscreen & sunglasses We both packed a durable outer shell to protect us from wind, rain, or even snow if the forecast changed. The Columbia Saudan Pro 3L is our go-to anytime we’re hiking or climbing in unpredictable conditions because it’s lightweight enough to pack away when we don’t need it, but gives us full waterproof and windproof protection when the weather takes a turn 🫡 A few tips if you’re planning to hike white mountain OR any 14er: ⛰️ Start early Afternoon thunderstorms are incredibly common, so your goal should be to be completely off the summit by noon. 😴 Sleep at elevation Going from low elevation straight to 14,000 feet is a huge shock to the system! Try to spend the night around 10–11,000 feet before your summit push to help your body acclimate 💧 more snacks and water than you’d think staying fueled and hydrated is one of the best ways to not get sick from the altitude 🌦️ Check the weather but be prepared for it to change anyway ALWAYS PACK FOR THE WORST CASE SCENARIO BC YOU LITERALLY NEVER KNOW! 🐢 Pace yourself slow and steadyyyy is the name of the game 🏔️ Know when to turn around No summit is worth risking your safety!!!! #engineeredforwhatever #whitemountain #14er #Hiking #mountainhiking
