I haven’t watched the Damilola Taylor documentary yet because, honestly, I already know it’s going to be long and triggering. Growing up in the same area, being around the same age and walking some of the same streets makes this one particularly difficult for me. South London — Peckham — has always been home. But it was also an area where there was a lot of crime and violence. Maybe I was too young at the time to fully comprehend the extent of it, but I soon learned. What happened to Damilola was a horrific tragedy. But I have to question why this documentary is being shown now, during Black History Month. This is supposed to be a month where we acknowledge the hardships Black people have faced, celebrate our resilience and recognise how far we’ve come. Instead, what I’m seeing is another round of silly diaspora wars — African vs Caribbean, Nigerian vs Jamaican, who is to blame, who belongs where — rather than having meaningful conversations about the racism, poverty, inequality and systemic failures that shaped the environment in which tragedies like this could happen. We can talk about the complexities within our communities without turning them into another reason to divide ourselves. Damilola deserved better. Rest in peace, Damilola Taylor. 🕊️
