President Trump demurred when asked Thursday what concessions Russia should be willing to make in order to secure a peace deal in Ukraine. “It’s too early to say what’s going to happen. Maybe Russia will give up a lot. Maybe they won’t. It’s all dependent on what is going to happen,” he said at a joint press conference with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The president also echoed Russia’s stated rationale for invading its neighbor: that it was about keeping NATO off its borders. “Russia is taking over a pretty big chunk of territory,” he said. “And they also have said from day one, long before President Putin, they’ve said they cannot have Ukraine via NATO. They said that very strongly.” Over the past two days, the Trump administration has been clear about what it believes Kyiv would need to give up, taking major bargaining chips off the table. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Ukraine can’t expect to return to its pre-2014 borders, that it won’t become a member of NATO, that U.S. troops won’t enforce any post-war security guarantees, and that European troops deployed for peacekeeping need to be on a “non-NATO mission.” Those declarations drew backlash across European capitals and Secretary Hegseth appeared to walk them back today at a NATO press conference in Brussels, saying “everything is on the table.” “I think realism is an important part of the conversation that hasn’t existed enough inside conversations amongst friends,” he said. “But simply pointing out realism — like the borders won’t be rolled back to what everybody would like them to be in 2014 — is not a concession to Vladimir Putin. It’s a recognition of the hard-power realities on the ground after a lot of investment and sacrifice.” #trump #putin #ukrainewar #cspan
