“Breastfeeding is free.” But nobody talks about what the woman pays. She burns extra calories producing breast milk. Her body mobilises calcium to support her baby’s needs. Her hormones undergo significant changes. She deals with back pain, body aches, sleepless nights, and sometimes cracked, bleeding nipples. And that is just a fraction of what breastfeeding can demand from a woman physically and emotionally. Yes, breast milk does not come with a price tag. But producing it and feeding a baby can take a real toll on the mother’s body, time, comfort, and wellbeing. This is not to discourage breastfeeding. Breastfeeding has enormous benefits for both mother and baby. It is a reminder that when we celebrate breastfeeding, we must not forget the woman doing the breastfeeding. Mothers deserve more than praise for their sacrifice. They deserve practical support, adequate nutrition, rest, and people willing to help with the baby. Because breastfeeding may be free at the point of delivery, but it is certainly not cost-free for the woman. Support the mother, not just the breastfeeding. Breastfeeding awareness, maternal health, postpartum recovery, lactation, newborn care, breastfeeding challenges, new mothers, maternal nutrition, and postpartum wellbeing are all part of this conversation. #draizident #tallnigeriandoctor
