Bestie, it’s called the zipper merge and it’s designed by the DOT. You’re supposed to fill both lanes and merge at the alternating.

Actually you should merge at the merge point, it helps traffic move more efficiently. You wouldn’t have waited 40 min if everyone did it. Google it.
