$I’m grateful for my life in the U.S. but that doesn’t mean I had to accept it 🇨🇺 As a Latina, let’s face it, it’s not safe in the states. Despite be being born a U.S. Citizen (yes, citizens can be born abroad), ice is grabbing people left and right. I even got questioned, followed, and filmed with my children by a woman in Florida asing “where were we REALLY from??” How could I raise my kids around that, knowing Mami might get detained leaving them alone? ✏️ after an incident in my kids school which put their safety at risk and the school failed to be held accountable UNTIL child services was called and found at fault I knew our schools didn’t care about our kids. That’s just a fraction of the fear and trauma that families who have been victims of school shootings face. What if it was worse? 🚑 Healthcare is completely inaccesible, especially maternal health. Giving birth to BOTH of my children I almost lost my life due to staff simply not listening to what I was feeling, and even with insurance I owed well over $60,000! Then postpartum, I went to the ER 4 times before finally being treated for sepsis and guess what, another bill 💻 Hustle culture is NOT the way to live. I worked high level for a top U.S. bank and during my second pregancy I was asked “how will you balance work and kids, will your mother in law live with you” How is that okay (it’s not) and I even got fired while on disability healing from birth trauma. We are dispensable in the states. Now? I have a work life balance and I’m with my kids for every memory The U.S. was the only home I ever knew, my mother left Tunisia with me as a baby, and I only went back in 2018! I always felt more connected to my Cuban side as that was the only culture I was raised with, and that’s part of why leaving the U.S. was so crucial now.
