Freshman Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ) was reprimanded on Thursday evening after he referred to African Americans as “colored people” on the House floor. The remark came during a debate on his amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that would prohibit the Pentagon from considering race, gender, religion, political affiliation or “any other ideological concepts” as the sole basis for recruitment, training, education, promotion or retention decisions. “I’m old enough to remember when Black officers, when women, were not allowed to serve,” said Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-OH), speaking in opposition to the amendment. “You are setting us back. On this floor, on both sides of the aisle, we have people of color, we have people who have served.” Rep. Crane, a former Navy SEAL, countered that his amendment had “nothing to do with whether or not colored people or Black people or anybody can serve.” Rep. Beatty, who previously served as chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, called his remark “offensive and very inappropriate” and asked for it to be stricken from the record. “I am asking for unanimous consent to take down the words of referring to me or any of my colleagues as ‘colored people,’” she said. The unanimous consent request was granted, and Rep. Crane later said he misspoke. “In a heated floor debate on my amendment that would prohibit discrimination on the color of one’s skin in the Armed Forces, I misspoke,” he said in a statement. “Every one of us is made in the image of God and created equal.” #houseofrepresentatives #congress #ndaa #elicrane #joycebeatty #cspan
