Double check that the mirror is not glued to the wall already. We did the same thing with a mirror frame and those notches weren’t even holding it in

Drill though the wood - so your frame will hold the mirror- they are probably glue on as well

I did this to my mirror and we used a dremel tool to make a notch in the back of the wood
