Your argument loses a bit if you look at scale. Up to a tb for same class of performance you are probably right. Scaling to 2tb or more the gap widens

I use an m.2 for my OS and application launchers, a sata for my online games, and a HD for my single player games 😅 works okay for me!

The performance difference is probably not gonna be huge when gaming, as I believe the load times are gonna be bottlenecked by your cpu and gpu.

Another reason to go nvme is buying a laptop later, it might only have an nvme now with the trend of thin laptops; my gigabyte aero only takes NVMe.
