It’s hard not to become really defensive as it’s likely to trigger quite intense emotion. In a situation like this the secret is doing the opposite of what feels instinctive. Stay calm and self- assured. This changes the dynamic of the conversation as you’re not matching the energy of the manager. Lead with curiosity. This could sound like: “I’m curious what I did that was rude?” Then suggest that you share your perspective so they have the whole picture before deciding how to proceed.
