Rotorblade Aeroelasticity CFD simulation 🚁 Sometimes, solving the fluid is not enough. Like in this case. Rotorblades are "just" extruded airfoils. More or less just 2D sections and then extruded. 🛬 But unlike most planes and propellers, these rotorblades are very long for its profile length - and very long compared to its thickness. ⚙ Even with the stiffest materials, these blades twist and turn and bend under the aerodynamic load - there's a multi-ton helicopter hanging on the other side! 🛩 Everybody that has run a single airfoil cfd - just 2D - knows that these foils are quite sensible to even a few degrees change in Angle of Attack (AoA). 🤝 and that's why you can't just solve the fluid, because the bending and twisting of the blades has a HUGE impact on the fluid - and thus on lift, drag and required helicopter power! With Simcenter STAR-CCM+ these fluid-structure-interactions are so much easier, because we have our mechanics solvers right on board, no "co-simulation", no external exchange with other software (but still, this is possible, if you wish so). #simcenter #cfd #simulation #fsi #helicopter
