His remarkable life combined exceptional military courage, deep religious mysticism, uncompromising political extremism, and extraordinary violence, earning him enduring nicknames such as the “Bloody Baron” and the “Mad Baron,” while historians generally regard him as both a gifted cavalry commander and a deeply ruthless warlord whose campaigns were accompanied by widespread atrocities and terror. Born in 1886 in Graz, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Ungern-Sternberg belonged to an ancient Baltic German noble family whose members had served the Russian Empire for generations, and although his birthplace lay outside Russia, he spent most of his youth in what is now Estonia, then a province of the Russian Empire. The collapse of the Russian monarchy during the revolutions of 1917 profoundly transformed Ungern’s outlook, for as a passionate monarchist he believed that the overthrow of Tsar Nicholas II represented not merely the fall of a government but the destruction of civilization itself, and unlike many commanders of the White Army who regarded the Russian Civil War primarily as a military struggle against Bolshevism, Ungern interpreted the conflict in almost apocalyptic and religious terms. He became convinced that democracy, socialism, liberalism, and modern materialism were symptoms of a worldwide moral and spiritual collapse, and that only the restoration of traditional monarchy and religious authority could save humanity from destruction. During the Russian Civil War he joined forces with Grigory Semyonov, another prominent anti-Bolshevik commander operating in eastern Siberia, and together they organized cavalry formations composed of Russians, Cossacks, Buryats, Mongols, and various other ethnic groups who fought against the advancing Red Army.
