nooo, wrap the ptfe around the thread backwards and it will screw in with a nice tight fit

or... you could get proper packing tape or replace the old stuff with a ptfe washer... this is a botch that will not last... and turn the water off

PTFE in the packing box (which is what that bit is) = stiffer/harder to turn tap. But yeah, this is the fix for that.

Use a bar of soap to pack the gland instead of the PTFE, works both as a sealant and a lubricant to stop it seizing
