Outer Space is deadly to us Earthlings. Its radiation damages our cells and causes mutations. And weightlessness messes with our bodies, too. Still, plans are being made for long-duration space trips – to Mars for example. But it’s pretty far. It’d take half a year just to get there. So, if we wanted to spend really extended stretches of time in space, could we have babies there? Different experiments have been performed to try to answer that question. Pregnant rats were once sent on a 10-day space trip, for example. When they gave birth back on Earth, many of their offspring developed health issues. Freeze-dried mouse sperm was also sent up for nine months. Its DNA was damaged some, though it was later used to produce little mice back down on Earth that were seemingly healthy. Human sperm has also been sent to the ISS. Now, mouse embryos spent a few days developing on board the space station. They were sent up by a Japanese research team that has now published* results. So far, though, no study has been able to follow a full pregnancy cycle – from fertilization all the way up to birth.
