I HAVE TWO BASSET HOUNDS. I’m pretty sure it’s because they’re hunting dogs and their chest collects smells and the ears keep it in place but idk

Correct ! Their ears lay along side their faces when their nose is pointed towards the ground so it funnels the scent !

They are actually long because of their fox hunting origins. They were to distract the foxes so they wouldn't bit the dog's nose.
