The rain poured endlessly outside the hospital window. Eight-year-old Jennie sat quietly on a plastic chair, clutching a worn stuffed rabbit against her chest. Her eyes were red from crying. She had been sitting there for hours. Waiting. Hoping. Praying. But no one ever came back out of that room. Not her mother. Not her father. No one. The world felt too big and too empty. “Hey.” Jennie looked up. A girl around her age stood in front of her. She had messy black hair, scraped knees, and an oversized hoodie. The girl held out a chocolate bar. “You look sad.” Jennie stared at it. “I don’t want it.” “Good.” The girl sat beside her and started opening the wrapper. “I wasn’t actually giving it to you.” Jennie blinked. Then, for the first time that day, she almost smiled. The girl noticed. “There it is.” “What?” “The smile.” Jennie quickly looked away. The girl offered the chocolate again. “Now you can have some.” Jennie hesitated before taking a small piece. “My name is Lisa.” “Jennie.” And just like that, something changed. Neither of them knew it yet. But that small conversation would become the beginning of a promise that lasted a lifetime. -–— Years passed. Jennie eventually learned that Lisa lived in the same orphanage she was transferred to after losing her parents. Life wasn’t easy there. Some days were lonely. Some nights were even worse. But Lisa was always there. Whenever Jennie had nightmares, Lisa would climb out of her own bed and sit beside her. Whenever other children teased Jennie for being quiet, Lisa would stand in front of her. Whenever Jennie cried, Lisa stayed. Always. One evening, the two girls sat on the roof of the orphanage watching the stars. Jennie leaned her head against Lisa’s shoulder. “What if nobody adopts us?” Lisa shrugged. “Then we’ll adopt each other.” Jennie laughed. “That’s not how it works.” “It should.” “What if we get separated?” Lisa turned to face her. “We won’t.” “But what if we do?” Lisa thought for a moment. Then she gently poked Jennie’s forehead. “Then you’ll still have me.” “How?” Lisa smiled. “Because I’ll always be in your heart.” Jennie rolled her eyes. “That’s cheesy.” “You love it.” “…Maybe.” -–— When they turned eighteen, they left the orphanage together. For the first time in their lives, they were free. And terrified. The world was much bigger than either of them expected. Money was scarce. Jobs were difficult. Some nights they survived on instant noodles. Other nights they survived on hope. Whenever Jennie wanted to give up, Lisa was there. Whenever Lisa doubted herself, Jennie reminded her of her worth. They became each other’s home. Not because they had nowhere else to go. But because they chose each other. Every day. -–— One evening years later, Jennie sat alone in their apartment. The silence felt strange. Lisa was away on a business trip. Only three days. Yet the apartment already felt empty. Jennie found herself opening an old box hidden inside a closet. Inside were photographs. Old letters. Childhood drawings. And a crumpled piece of paper. Jennie unfolded it carefully. It was something Lisa had written when they were thirteen. The handwriting was terrible. The spelling was even worse. But Jennie smiled as she read it. Dear Jennie, If you’re reading this, you’re probably sad. Stop it. You’re annoying when you’re sad. I know life is scary sometimes. But no matter what happens, I’ll stay. Even if we’re far apart. Even if things get hard. You’ll always be my favorite person. And I’ll always be in your heart. — Lisa Jennie’s eyes became blurry. Not from sadness. But from realizing just how long Lisa had been keeping that promise. That night, her phone rang. A video call. Lisa. “Miss me?” Jennie laughed. “No.” “Liar.” “A little.” “A little?” “Okay. A lot.” Lisa grinned triumphantly. “There she is.” ⬇️⬇️ #jenlisa #oneshot #au #fyp
