They were left hanging for 25 minutes. Two teenagers have been awarded just over £200,000 each after being trapped 100ft in the air when an amusement park ride broke down for 25 minutes. Xitlali Gomez-Salais and Evie Yannotta, who were 13 and 14 at the time, were celebrating their eighth-grade graduations when the AtmosFEAR ride at Oaks Amusement park in Portland, Oregon malfunctioned on 14 June 2024. The girls, who were among 28 riders stranded mid-air, later told of the agony of blood pooling in their faces, struggling to breathe, and the sheer terror that their shoulder harnesses might open sending them plunging 100 feet to the ground. Both said they experienced post-traumatic stress and anxiety. AtmosFEAR, which operates like a pendulum and can swing passengers completely upside down, stopped near its highest point. Oaks Park and the ride’s manufacturer, Zamperla, were successfully sued on the basis that a lack of an emergency safety plan severely worsened the crisis. The lawsuits alleged that passengers screamed, cried, vomited and passed out while waiting to be lowered.
