Linguistics should be descriptive anyways, not prescriptive. Even if Chaucer didn't use singular "they" it would be fine for the language to evolve.

The epicene third person! “They” can be singular or plural, just like “you.” (But clarity comes first; if the context is confusing, avoid it.)

In Italian singular 'they' was used decades ago as a more formal way of speaking. instead of 'lei' (modern formal speech) they used 'loro'. 👍
