Now you might say “you’re taking it too seriously” or “just chill, it’s just a song” Well, art, music and entertainment always has messaging behind it, which essentially shapes the culture and society we live in. Those who are dismissive of the fact that lyrics don’t influence culture are naive to the reality of music and how it influences our thoughts, feelings and beliefs. Referring to women as “a thing” essentially objectifies them and reduces them to waste that is to be discarded. Much like what we see in today’s world and women themselves objectify themselves because that’s what culture has taught them. And then the irony is that we as Muslims are then told that we “degrade women” by protecting them, and encouraging them to preserve their chastity, honour and dignity by covering up. Well, I would rather my womenfolk cover themselves and protect themselves from a world which openly references women as objects. Don’t ever let them confuse you or make you thing you’re being too much by being protective
