Rubicon is 18 years old this year, a powerful, wise male who has earned every stripe of respect in his pride. 🦁 During feeding time, you’ll hear a different side of him. Deep, steady growls rumble through the enclosure as he enjoys his meal. Those sounds are not aggression they are communication. In lion language, a strong growl simply says: “This is mine. Please keep your distance.” Even though his brother shares the same territory, feeding moments are personal. In the wild, male lions protect their food from competitors and even pride members. That instinct never disappears. Rubicon’s growls are a natural behaviour that ensures he can eat calmly without feeling challenged. At his age, maintaining good body condition is extremely important. Senior lions need balanced nutrition, calm feeding environments, and minimal stress. By respecting his signals and giving him space, we support his wellbeing and allow him to express natural behaviours safely. Watching an older male like Rubicon still stand confidently over his meal, communicating clearly and setting boundaries, is a reminder that age does not take away dignity or presence. Respect. Space.
