I’m a math teacher. The problem as written is 9. If there is additional info then the problem is improperly written.

PEMDAS is syntax not law. That’s why you should parenthesize everything.

well explain why super computers always land at 6/2(1+2)=1 if it can be 9??

The parenthesis is done. there is no debate on this. Its now multiply. Literally no one in the professional math world would interpret it otherwise.

it's 9. nothing ambiguous or difficult about this. math only works if everyone follows the same standards and rules.

Hi :
At the end of the day PEMDAS doesn’t even matter - it’s completely related to context.

the reason why the ( ) don't come 1st is because the 2 is not separated from the division by a 2nd set of parentheses, so left to right is the rule

Even with 6/2(3) you still have pemdas where multiplication comes before division so it's still 6/6

easy 2(1+2) becomes (2+4) which is (6) then 6/6 is 1

It's only 9, that's how it works, you can check any type of calculator that has pemdas included in them and it knows which calculations to do first

if if it isn't 6/(2(1+2)), then the answer is 9. it isn't ambiguous at all

I'm going to disagree. To get 1 it should be written 6/(2(1+2)).

The parenthesis have nothing to do with it. M or multiplication comes before division, so 6/6=1

Because it is written left to right and not vertically, the 2 would have to be in a parentheses for it to be interpreted as the 6 being over the 2(1+2
