I’m back in New York for the first time in three years. Our relationship status with this city is “it’s complicated.” We’ve broken up more times than I can count, yet somehow I always end up coming back. I first came here about eight years ago. And like most people landing in NYC for the first time, my initial thought was something along the lines of: “God, this place is disgusting. I want to live here forever.” After that first trip, I fell in love with the city and started visiting several times a year. At some point it turned into a full-on obsession — I’d even fly here just for the weekend. In my previous life, Moscow had direct flights to New York. You could board a plane on Thursday night and be at your desk on Monday morning as if nothing happened. With every visit the city felt a little closer. I made friends here, found my favorite spots, and even had a barista who stopped asking what coffee I drink. There was a moment when I seriously considered moving. By then my wife and I were already dating, and she was getting ready to jump from PwC to McKinsey. I remember us walking around Hudson Yards and discussing whether she should apply not to the Moscow office, but straight to the New York one. She’d handle international deals, and I’d find something in my field — or, worst case, wash dishes in some Manhattan diner. But the more often I came here, the more I wondered if New York was actually a good place to live. So in 2022 I decided to stay for a while and test that theory. A month later it became clear: New York has a special talent — it’s always at its best from a distance. Visiting as a tourist is great. Staying long-term is more of an endurance test. So I decided to keep New York in the category of “cities that inspire me,” and come back regularly, but never for too long. Then in 2023 my visa was denied. And even though I wasn’t desperate to return at that point, there was still this uneasy feeling: “What if we really never see each other again?” This year I finally got the visa, and here I am. The break actually did me good. Now everything feels new again — even though my feet still remember which corner has the best coffee.
