President Trump on Wednesday opened his first cabinet meeting by announcing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will visit the White House on Friday to sign a deal granting the U.S. rights to his country’s mineral resources. “President Zelensky is going to be coming on Friday. That’s now confirmed and we’re going to be signing an agreement, which will be a very big agreement,” the president said in the Cabinet Room. “It’s all been worked out. We are happy about it.” “Most importantly, by far, we’re going to make a deal with Russia and Ukraine to stop killing people,” he added. President Trump pursued the minerals deal as way of recouping U.S. aid given to Ukraine to help it defend against Russia. The president again repeated his unsubstantiated claim that the U.S. has given $350 billion to Ukraine, which he said is three times as much as European nations have contributed. “We’re in for probably $350 billion. Europe is in for $100 billion. And that’s a big difference,” he said. “The previous administration put us in a very bad position, but we’ve been able to make a deal where we’re going to get our money back and we’re going to get a lot of money in the future.” There are differing methods for counting how much aid has been given, but none of the figures comes close to $350 billion. According to the Kiel Institute, Europe has allocated $138 billion compared to $119 billion from the U.S. The Congressional Research Service says the U.S. has appropriated $174 billion in total emergency supplemental funding. #trump #zelensky #ukraine #ukrainewar #cspan
