Kike Hernandez hit three home runs in a playoff game. His mother watched it in Puerto Rico on a television running off a generator. Tonight he hit his 17th career postseason home run. That is one behind Mickey Mantle. October 19, 2017. Game 5 of the National League Championship Series at Wrigley Field, the Los Angeles Dodgers against the Chicago Cubs. Hurricane Maria had hit Puerto Rico a month earlier. About 80 percent of the island still had no electricity. Hernandez is from Toa Baja, and his family was in the dark. He told his mother before the game he was going to hit a home run. She told him to stop swinging for the fence.

Hurricane Maria had hit Puerto Rico a month earlier. About 80 percent of the island still had no electricity. Hernandez is from Toa Baja, and his family was in the dark. He told his mother before the game he was going to hit a home run. She told him to stop swinging for the fence. "I'm just going to try to hit a homer. Who cares about making contact? Everybody just wants homers." He homered in the second on the first pitch he saw. A grand slam in the third, first pitch again. A two run shot in the ninth. Seven runs batted in, a National League Championship Series record. He is still the only player ever to hit three home runs in a postseason game at Wrigley Field. The Dodgers won 11 to 1 and reached the World Series for the first time in 29 years. His father was in the ballpark, in remission from multiple myeloma. His mother was at his grandparents' house, watching on a TV plugged into a generator. He did not talk about the record. "For me to be able to give something for them to cheer about, even if it's for three or four hours, however long this game was, that's something I can't put into words." That is why people call him October Kike. He has never been a star. He is a utility man who has played every position on the field. Tonight in Atlanta, fourth inning of Game 3 against the Braves, game scoreless, he hit a two run home run 406 feet off Chris Sale. Number 17. Freddie Freeman hit his 18th in that same inning, tying him for tenth all time with Mickey Mantle and Reggie Jackson. Hernandez is one behind them. The Dodgers won 3 to 1 and lead the series two games to one. #MLB #dodgers #ladodgers #baseball #dodgersbaseball
