UPDATE ON SUMTER COUNTY KIDS WHO WERE HIT AND KILLED WHILE WALKING This is 12-year-old Basir Wells. He’s one of two kids in Sumter County who were hit and killed by two different pickup trucks Sunday, 6am on Britton Road near Highway 521. The other victim was 15-year-old Marvin Butler. Butler was a student at Crestwood High School and Wells was a student at Chestnut Oaks Middle School. While the families and community are mourning, Wells’ mother spoke to me about what she says happened in the moments leading up to the children’s deaths. Monica Capers tells me that her son, Butler, and two other surviving children were walking from a family member’s house. Capers says,”The kids were walking from one of the grandparents home enroute to come back towards home. While most people may ask and question why they would be walking from such a distance, you must keep in mind that all 4 of these kids are from that rural area, where walking from one destination to the next is basically their way of life.” She also adds, “When they were hit by the initial driver one of the kids were able to make a call to the grandma and she arrived to the scene before EMS arrived. While she was trying to assist the kids with their injuries the second vehicle came along. The grandmother made attempts to flag the car down so it would stop.” Capers is also responding to rumors that the children were involved in car break-ins. Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis confirmed with WIS car-break -ins were being investigated in the area but neither Wells, Butler or the other two surviving pedestrians were suspects in the case. #explore #sad #heartbreaking #allkidsmatter🩵 #rip #sumtersc
