Dawn breaks over a square in Seville, outside Doctor Bartolo's house. A man walks in singing alone, and before anything else he tells you exactly who he is: the jack of all trades of the city. Figaro is a barber, and the job makes him the go between for every lady and gentleman in town. In the lyrics he says everyone wants him at once, day and night: a wig here, a beard there, a bloodletting, a letter, all demanded in the same breath. The music keeps pace and speeds into a tongue twister, in what is called one of the hardest arias in the baritone repertoire. On stage the joke turns physical. The singer lathers a seated man's entire face, barber cloth around his neck, basin on the floor, and never stops singing over him. The customer pulls faces, the crowd laughs in close up, even a couple sitting up front gets caught mid laugh. Midway through the aria the lathered customer gives up and walks off. The jack of all trades finishes alone, singing straight at the audience: I am the jack of all trades of the city, and fortune will not fail me. It's Figaro's introduction before any scheme starts: minutes after this aria, Count Almaviva, who had been hiding, recognizes him and hires him to reach Rosina.
