We’ve used the paneling for updates too but turned it sideways so the lines are going vertically vs horizontal. Very inexpensive way to update.

Back when lumber was cheap I would buy sheets of sanded plywood and run it through my table saw cutting it into 4” strips. Could get (12) 4”x8’ panels

You can also use luon plywood. Have Home Depot or Lowe’s cut them into 6 inch or 8 inch boards.

Vertical is called paneling. I’ve spent countless hours removing 70s paneling just like it in an old house.
