Estranged parents might give me heat for this, but it needs to be said. I’m a licensed therapist and this is a perspective grounded in child developmental psychology and family systems theory. The quality of the parent/child relationship is the parent’s responsibility, even into and through adulthood. Estranged parents sometimes incorrectly think that children become their equal when they reach adulthood. Because of the inherent power differential in the parent child relationship, the child is always the child, and the parent is always the parent — No matter how old they get. This is how parent/child relationships are different than any other relationship. It is the parent’s job to provide safety and openness, and meet their child with curiosity and compassion throughout the lifespan. If a child is pushing back or leaning away (even an adult child), that is the parent’s cue to lean in — to get curious and open themselves up to what needs to be repaired. This is the responsibility of the parent. When children grow up, the parent is the adult in the house. That means they carry a really heavy responsibility, and it doesn’t end an adulthood. Because of the way they showed up in the child’s life, they foster a blueprint in their child that persists and continues into adulthood. This means what you see in a person’s relationship with their parent in adulthood started very early in childhood — not in adulthood. This is a complex conversation that can be upsetting to many people, so I handle it with immense care. This is not meant to blame or shame. It is meant simply to provide clarity about the parent/child dynamic, and what true responsibility is inherent in this crucial relationship. ** 📖⭐️For help with your most dysfunctional family dynamics and other challenging relationships, read “Mend or Move On.” ** #parentchildrelationship #familydysfunction #nocontactwithparent #familyestrangement #estrangedadultchildren
