I’ll see a baseline that says: “Student completes a five-step classroom routine with 80% accuracy.” Okay. Great. But HOW? Are they completing it independently? With verbal reminders? Gestural prompts? Modeling? Physical assistance? Because those are VERY different levels of performance. And if we’re not documenting the level and type of prompting, we’re missing important information about what the student can actually do. Let’s say a student completes a task with 80% accuracy when an adult verbally prompts them through every step. The annual goal is written for 90% accuracy. A year later, the student reaches 90%. GOAL MET! But wait… They’re STILL requiring an adult to prompt them through every step. Did their accuracy improve? YES. Did their independence improve? Not necessarily. THIS is why prompting levels and types matter in IEP baselines and goals. If independence is part of the goal, how can we accurately measure progress without tracking the assistance required? Now, not every student needs to complete every skill independently. Some students will continue to need accommodations, visual supports, AAC, or adult assistance. And that’s perfectly appropriate! The purpose isn’t to eliminate necessary support. It’s to accurately measure the skill we’re targeting. *Disclosure: All name, schools, and identifying details have been removed or altered to protect privacy.
