The Awan tribe shares many similarities with Pashtuns in habits, traditions, and character, and there is a historical reason behind this connection. But before discussing that, I would like to point out a common historical misunderstanding. The Awan tribe is often referred to as “Malik,” although “Malik” is not the name of a tribe. It is actually a title, just like “Sardar” or “Baig.” For example, Khushal Khan Khattak’s grandfather was named Malik Shehbaz Khan, while a famous Yousafzai chief was known as Malik Bhako Khan. The Awan tribe resembles Pashtuns partly because they lived for centuries within the Pashtun belt. According to historical traditions, their ancestor Aun Qutb Shah Baghdadi arrived through Afghanistan and settled near Peshawar. He had six sons, including Gohar Shah, Chohan, Muhammad Shah, Chhajh, and Tori, whose descendants later settled in Tirah and Kurram District. One of the most famous tribal chiefs of the Awan tribe was Malik Ameer Awan, also known as the Nawab of Kalabagh. Kalabagh was considered one of the important centers of the Awan tribe. The Awans living near the Chenab River in Sargodha, Chiniot, and Jhang are known for their distinct Punjabi accent, while the Awans of Hazara speak Hindko, and those living in the Pashtun belt commonly speak Pashto. Whether an Awan speaks Saraiki, Punjabi, Hindko, or Pashto, they remain deeply connected to their language, culture, and homeland. Across Pakistan, they have built a respected identity in every region. The Pakistan Armed Forces also has strong representation from the Awan tribe, and they are widely known for their patriotism and pride in Pakistan. Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi and Noor Khan are also counted among the notable sons of the Awan tribe. So next time you meet an Awan, remember that their history and cultural roots are also connected to the soil of the Pashtun land. history of awan tribe qotab shah Baghdadi. malik Muhammad ameer Awan.
