Turnips carved into lanterns predates pumpkins being carved into lanterns. Pumpkins weren’t used until the Irish immigrants came to the Americas.

Uk here, I know traditionally we have used turnips instead of pumpkins, but we've been using pumpkins for decades now. Turnip carvings are freaky tho

not true, im from UK and we never ever carve a turnip, turnips were originally used like a 100yrs ago maybe but not now

being British, that doesn't seem wholly accurate. historically, turnips may have been used, but England is such an American culture.
